Located 130 km east of Lisbon, the University of Évora, dated from 1559, has about 8000 students and 500 teachers, distributed over six departmental areas (Arts, Exact Sciences, Natural Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Economy and Management, Social and Human Sciences). The institution has a long experience in international research collaborations and consortia. The University’s mission is to educate students at the highest theoretical and practical levels, and to conduct academic research.
This mission is accomplished through (i) promoting the growth, transfer and application of knowledge, (ii) establishing centres of excellence in teaching and learning, (iii) contributing to realise of the Bologna process; (iv) fostering a substantial increase in mobility (v) developing integrated study programs (vi) continue the internationalization of the educational process and research activity, (vii) intensify academic staff exchange (viii) developing co-operation industry-academia (ix) seeking new sources of funding for activities, and (x) pursuing further initiatives offered by different EC programs integrating them into curricula and processes.
Facility cores are available which assist scientific investigators with laboratory support and services in the areas of aerobiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry or biostatistics. These facilities are integrated in research centers or available at the laboratories of departments. Administrative support for research teams is performed by the new Service of Science and Technology, created very recently in order to support researchers. Dissemination of research findings to the health care, corporate and policy-making communities and to the public at large is conducted through the “Portuguese Aerobiological Network”. This structure is coordinated and processed at the laboratory of Palinology and Aerobiology of the department of Biology at a national level, in cooperation with a medical society.
The Group of Biochemistry of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Évora integrates this research team. The Group has large experience in several analytical methods including immunological methods (namely ELISA for hormones and pollen detection and quantification), different chromatographic techniques (such as HPLC, LCMS and GC), electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, fluorescence and bioluminescence methods and PCR and other molecular approaches, electrochemical analysis and antimicrobial assays. Over the years research has been focused in biochemistry, including the development of ELISA techniques, clinical and toxicological biochemistry, and detoxification processes, biotechnogical process and xenobiotic metabolism.
